Nephew of Kohima soldier fundraising on VJ Day 75 weekend

Charles Barclay is the nephew of Lt Charles Barclay who was killed at the Battle of Kohima on 5th May 1944.  He cycled in the Prudential RideLondon event which this year was a virtual event over the weekend of 15/16 August - poignant timing as the nation commemorated the 75th anniversary of VJ Day, with many participants riding locally or in their homes.  Charles is raising funds for the trust in memory of his uncle.   He rode his bike from London 120 miles through the Essex and Suffolk countryside to Dunwich on the Suffolk coast between Southwold and Aldborough, following the route of the famous annual Dunwich Dynamo night ride but riding in daytime so that he could actually see the scenery!

A few words from Charles about the ride:

"The ride started in persistent drizzle but happily the thunderstorms had already been through, leaving a few flooded roads to navigate. On the first part out of London I latched on to a group of London cycle club riders heading out to the Essex countryside before settling in, solo for the long haul. The cycling café in Sudbury is no more, sadly, but an Italian restaurant overlooking the river Stour provided excellent carbonara for lunch. The latter part via Framlingham passed through historic villages and open fields, the verges here bone dry after months without rain. After a photo call at the Dunwich beach at 4:30pm, I met JC and Jackson (the poodle) at The Ship for a pint, before we headed to friends in Westleton for tea at the house I designed for them a few years ago. It was an excellent East Anglian cycle ride to raise money for KET and to remember VJ Day, and indeed Uncle Charlie, who was an East Anglian at heart and served in the Royal Norfolks.”
